Australian musician and teacher Anna McPhail has had a lifelong passion for pianos. Her social media videos of playing out-of-tune pianos and rebuilding an instrument went viral. Annas fascination with the instrument brought her to Vienna, where she worked alongside piano maker Bernhard Balas. In this podcast episode, Anna and Bernhard share their passion for pianos – from building and restoring them to smashing them. They also explore some of Bernhard’s treasures, including a piano designed by the renowned Austrian architect and designer Josef Hoffmann, and discuss the uncertain future of traditional piano craftsmanship. Nicola Eller is host of episode #126.
